Putney Bridge Re-opening 26th September 2014
GREAT NEWS!!! PUTNEY BRIDGE IS TO RE-OPEN AHEAD OF SCHEDULE ON FRIDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER!!
The people os South West London will be delighted that the repairs to the Grade II listed bridge are ahead of schedule and are expected to be finished 2 weeks earlier than originally expected and the Bridge will finally re-open on Friday the 26th September 2014.
The 1.5 million pound repairs started on Monday 14th July and were originally scheduled to last 12 weeks, ending originally sometime during October 2014.
The exceptionally rapid turnaround is due to the contractors who have been working on the Bridge and the superb planning and management teams at Wandsworth Council.
A statement, released by Wandsworth Cllr. Jonathan Cook, says "I would like to thank the travelling public for the great patience they have shown and feel sure that they, along with local businesses, will share our delight that this important Thames river crossing will be back to normal before the end of this month."
“Getting a job of this scale completed early, properly and also very importantly on budget is a real triumph.”
Original Update about the Bridge closure from the Putney Town Centre Manager (02/06/14):
Dear All,
It has now been confirmed that Putney bridge will close from Monday 14th July and likely to reopen in October, so that essential major repairs can be carried out.
The main bulk of the repairs will be carried out during the school holidays when traffic levels are traditionally at their lightest. The closure time has been reduced from the 6 months originally discussed which means it will reopen in plenty of time before Christmas trade starts.
Whilst the works are ongoing pedestrians will still be able to cross the bridge, as will cyclists – although they will need to dismount. Buses will operate a shuttle service from both ends of the bridge. This means that passengers will need to cross it on foot to continue their journeys.
We have asked the Valuation Office Agency to visit the borough to assess whether local businesses will be eligible for a reduction in their business rates. The agency would need to class the bridge closure as a ‘material change of circumstances’ before businesses could successfully apply for a reduction.
We are holding a drop-in session at St Mary’s Church on Putney Bridge between 1p.m and 8p.m on Wednesday 11th June. People can come and ask questions and find out more about what is happening to the Bridge and the work schedule. Various Officers from Wandsworth Council will be in attendance – myself included.
If deemed necessary we will also hold an evening briefing meeting for businesses to attend later in June as well as further drop in sessions at the Putney Exchange Shopping Centre – dates tbc.
There is a webpage www.wandsworth.gov.uk/putneybridge with further information or email [email protected].
A full press release will be issued by Wandsworth Council later today, and letters are being delivered to businesses and residents over this week.
The timetabled Business Watch meeting organised by PC Oliver Strebel is tomorrow at 10.00hrs in the meeting room upstairs in Robert Dyas. This is a good opportunity to network with other business managers, and discuss issues pertinent across the town centre.
Kind Regards
Nicola
